Stage II paints ‘Picasso’

DELAND – What would have happened if painter Pablo Picasso had met physicist Albert Einstein in a Parisian bar in 1904 – and a certain rock ‘n’ roll singer traveled back in time to chat with them?

That’s the question answered by Steve Martin in his play “Picasso at the Lapin Agile.” The Sans Theater Center Stage II production of the fantasy-comedy opens today and runs through April 24.

“I had read the play years ago and it’s just so different,” says Audrey Coldron, director of the play and Sands artist-in-residence. “It’s surreal. It’s very, very funny. It’s very rich in its range of reference. There are so many references to scientific theory, aesthetic theory and philosophy. But it’s all done with such fun.”

In Martin’s play, Einstein and Picasso meet in a Paris bar before they are about to make their monumental innovations in their respective fields of science and art. They become instant rivals as they battle wits about painting, scientific probability, lust and the future of the world.

And the scenario becomes even more fantastic when the space time continuum ruptures and they’re joined by another 20^th century genius – one who looks suspiciously like Elvis Presley

They cast includes Keith Poulsen as Albert Einstein, Eric Colley as Pablo Picasso and Chris Emerson as “the singer.” Other cast members in Ray Wood, Ron Burgher, Alix Miller, Katie Keyser, Timothy D. Turner, Christian Read and Heidi Hilliard.
